Where to eat on Koh Samui: a villa guest's guide, area by area

Samui Luxury Stays9 min read

Koh Samui is a small island with an outsized dining scene. Within a thirty-minute drive of almost any villa you can find a plate of southern Thai curry at a family-run seafood shack, wood-fired pizza on the sand, fine dining at a resort or a cocktail on a hilltop terrace with the sun going down behind it. The difficulty isn't finding somewhere to eat. It's knowing which of the hundreds of options are worth your evening.

This guide walks around the island by area, highlighting well-established places that guests and locals return to again and again. Restaurants open, close, change hands and change menus, so treat the names below as a starting point and check hours before you go. Our concierge team is always glad to confirm what is open, book a table and arrange transport.

Bophut and Fisherman's Village

For many guests, Bophut is the natural first stop. Fisherman's Village, the old waterfront lined with restored shophouses, has the greatest concentration of restaurants within walking distance of each other, and strolling along the beach road before choosing is half the fun.

The Friday walking street, covered in our guide to night markets, turns the village into a lively evening market and is worth timing a dinner around.

Maenam and the north coast

Maenam is quieter and more local in feel, and its restaurants reflect that. Expect friendly, family-run places, relaxed beachfront dining and a few standout hilltop venues.

Choeng Mon and the north-east

Choeng Mon is one of the island's most relaxed corners, and its dining reflects that: sheltered bay, small cafés and a handful of refined resort restaurants. It's a good place for a long lunch by the water or a quiet coffee, and it's close to the airport for arrivals and departures.

Chaweng

Chaweng is the island's busiest area and has the widest choice, from open-air street food to cocktail bars and international fine dining.

Lamai and the south-east

Lamai has a more laid-back and traditional feel, with a mix of seafood restaurants, small cafés and stylish beach clubs. Sabeinglae, with its display of fresh catch at the entrance and whole grilled fish sold by weight, is typical of the best local seafood experiences. Further south along the coast, small beachfront restaurants around Hua Thanon and Thong Krut offer simple, delicious meals in unhurried settings, often at very reasonable prices.

How to order seafood well

At a seafood restaurant, you usually choose your fish, then pick how it is cooked, such as steamed with lime and chilli, grilled with salt or fried with garlic. It is priced by weight, so ask the price per kilo and have the fish weighed before you commit.

The west and south-west: sunset dining

The west coast is where the island slows down. Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam face the setting sun, and dining here is as much about the view as the menu.

Our companion article, where to watch the sunset, explores this coast in more detail.

Fine dining and special occasions

For a celebration, the island's luxury resorts offer some of its most memorable meals: tasting menus in cliff-top settings, beachfront dining with tables on the rocks and southern Thai cooking elevated by high-end kitchens. These generally require reservations, and the best tables go quickly in the peak season. Mention any dietary needs or occasions when booking, and ask about dress codes in advance.

Practical tips for dining out

Dining without leaving the villa

Many guests eventually decide that one of the best meals of the week happens at the villa itself, cooked by a private chef who shops that morning at the local market. Our private chef guide explains how to make the most of it, and we are glad to arrange a chef, a market tour or a catered evening on the terrace.

The short version

Bophut and Maenam suit relaxed, varied dining within easy reach of most villas, Chaweng has the widest choice and the liveliest nights, Lamai and the south reward those who seek out local seafood, and the west coast is made for sunsets. Book ahead, check hours and let your villa team handle transport. If you would like recommendations tailored to your group, or a table booked for your first evening, our team is happy to help.
